No new updates in some time, but as usual, that does not mean I have not been busy. Aside from attending karate classes with my kids, I had the stupid idea sometime in mid-2020 to completely replace Google for my IT and smart-home needs. While, there is an inkling of anti-establishment thinking in my decision, I mostly wanted to have something to fill my free-time during quarantine. I built a home-server, with not a lot to do with it, and I needed to give it more to do besides fill up precious disc space with Plex movies.
Unraid is a fantastic OS to manage virtual machines, as well as provide some data protection for a basic home server. It’s fantastic for people, like me, who have a hard time deciding what they want to do with a home server. Out of the box, it provides the ability to stand up virtual machines, manage docker instances, and install applications through an application manager. That’s a high-level view. Additionally, it manages your hard drives and protects your data using a parity disk, which it periodically validates the integrity of.
Thus far, I’ve created a home SAMBA share, several development VMs, Plex server, 3 Minecraft servers, a bitcoin mining, Dynamic DNS, docker images, and a few more fun things. In the works, which, I am I am hoping to add to the following:
- Weather Database tracker – 10% complete
- OwnCloud Instance – not started
- SMTP server – not started
- Home Hub Controller – 25%
- Personal Git – 75%
- Personal Music Streaming Service – 75%
- Steam OS VM (when the new version is released)
- Dynamic DNS (caught up in the options)
